I'm a PhD candidate in the Geography Department at UC Berkeley, a Ford Foundation Dissertation Fellow (2011-2012), and a faculty member at the California College of the Arts. My background is in architectural design and practice. In my academic life, I research former military landscapes and spaces of memory related to the World War II homefront and the Cold War. I'm also trained as an oral historian, and I collaborate with the Bancroft Library's Regional Oral History Office at UC Berkeley. I co-founded the experimental landscape collective Demilit. More broadly, I study urban cultures, social imaginaries of cities, the history of cities, contemporary architecture, and digital media. I'm interested in knowing more about shared ideas of public or urban space, and how these shape the city. I believe that understanding what Lefebvre called "spaces of representation" can uncover ways of building a socially and environmentally just metropolis.
